What is Safe and Active Flint?

The Safe and Active Flint (SAF) project is a community-based project that aims to promote physical activity in Flint by encouraging the creation of a supportive street network that enables all residents to incorporate active transportation into their daily routines.  “Active transportation” is pedestrian-oriented and includes walking and biking as transportation choices.  The purpose of this project is to make Flint streets safe and accessible and to encourage residents of all ages and abilities to choose active transportation.

Why we care

Michigan residents are in a “health crisis;” a majority of Michigan adults are overweight or obese.  One approach to combating this problem is to encourage people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.  There is, however, a big obstacle to accomplishing this for Flint residents.  Active transportation in Flint, as in a lot of communities, can be impossible, or even dangerous, because of the way transportation networks have been traditionally designed around the automobile.

What we're doing about it

To address this problem, the SAF Coalition was formed from a multidisciplinary group of local stakeholders to guide a multi-year initiative that will encourage active transportation in Flint.  The project is a community-based collaborative effort funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation and facilitated through the Michigan Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, in partnership with the Crim Fitness Foundation.
