Safe and Active Genesee for Everyone (SAGE) is a collaborative of local advocates, non-profits, private and government organizations all working to advocate for and support active living initiatives across Genesee County. Active Living is integrating physical activity into everyday life. SAGE addresses programs, policies, and infrastructure that support and provide opportunities for people to be active. One way in which we address these issues is by promoting active transportation. “Active Transportation” is pedestrian-oriented and includes walking and biking as transportation choices. Give active transportation a try by joining us for Smart Commute!
Michigan residents are in a “health crisis;” a majority of Michigan adults are overweight or obese. One approach to combating this problem is to encourage people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. There is, however, a big obstacle to accomplishing this for Genesee County residents. Active transportation in Genesee County, as in a lot of communities, can be impossible, or even dangerous, because of the way transportation networks have been traditionally designed around the automobile.
To address this problem, the SAGE Coalition was formed from a multidisciplinary group of local stakeholders to guide a multi-year initiative that will encourage active transportation in Genesee County. The project is a community-based collaborative effort funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation and facilitated through the Crim Fitness Foundation, in partnership with the Michigan Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.
The SAGE Coalition meets every 2nd Friday of the month from 10am- noon at the Crim Fitness Foundation.
